Syrian Air Force Attempt to Overtake Daraa

The Syrian Air Force (SAF) attempted to overtake the city of Daraa today in a heavy bombing campaign. After designating suspected rebel locations throughout the city of Daraa, The (SAF) commenced heavy bombing runs over those locations just after dawn.

It was initially assumed that only one location was being targeted but videos coming out today (Oct-26-2013) clearly show several locations being bombed. After hours of bombing the (SAF) was still unable to secure the rebel held city of Daraa.

Reports are still coming in but journalists in the area are being prevented from entering the city and no one is allowed on the streets for safety concerns. Roads leading to Daraa were blocked days earlier indicating a possible air strike was imminent. Civilian casualties are reported to be high but no exact figures have been substantiated.

The bombing of Daraa is only the latest in a series of attempts to dislodge rebel strongholds. The embattled rebels are becoming increasingly difficult to root out considering they have the support of the populous. The resistance of the rebels against the Syrian president Asaad is viewed as a struggle for the people against a brutal and totalitarian dictator. Asaad remains determined to bend the will of the people to his rule. As the world watches this civil war play on we may wonder what the significance of the end result means to the rest of the world.

The Syrian port of Tartus is the last port where Russia holds a secure entry into the Middle East. If Asaad is overthrown, the new leadership would most certainly remember it was Russian armament raining down on their people during the bloody civil war. Russia's access to the Middle East would be severed and bring about a massive economic disaster. Russia receives an estimated 2.5 billion barrels of oil from Syria. Oil to Russia from neighboring regions must also flow through this port at Tartus.

America's concern is less about economy but more about the strategic location. It is uncertain who will take power in Syria if Asaad is defeated. And the threat of Al Qaeda insurgency is most likely the worst case scenario. After decades of wearing down the control of the terrorist organization, control of Syria would allow Al Qaeda to threaten neighboring countries and recruit more forces. The outcome in Syria threatens to further destabilize the region. It is widely believed that Al Qaeda insurgents are already fighting among the rebels to overthrow the president making any proposals to assist the rebels controversial.

In light of this knowledge do you feel the outcome of the Syrian Civil War directly affects America’s national security? Add me as a friend on Facebook and post your comments.

Woman Faints at Pres. Obama's Health Care Event

A woman standing behind the President during his speech Monday was noticeably experiencing some anxiety. Twice she whispered to another standing beside her that she was feeling dizzy. She apparently didn't want to disrupt the President's speech. President Obama overheard her behind him and turn just in time to steady the woman before she fainted.

Those of us who have been in the military standing at parade rest know not to lock our knees when standing in place for long periods. This constriction of the vessels in the legs causes enough blood to collect in the muscles and tissues to limit the blood supply to the brain. Once this occurs there is little you can do to prevent the inevitable collapse.

This is important to know as we will soon be getting the shock to our senses at the mandatory cost to every American as a result of the Affordable Care Act. When we are hit with this new cost it will be important to not lock your knees when you experience the dizzying realization that you will now have to pay for mandatory health care that is substandard to your current company provided health plan.

Perhaps you have no current health care plan at all because you have nothing remaining after groceries. Rest assured, our President will catch you when you become woozy from malnutrition. Your new health care plan will most likely cover one decent meal during your limited hospital stay.

Not to leave the Republicans out, we must be aware of their near loss of consciousness during the two terms before President Obama. American troops had never seen what 5 crates of money looked like before we sent a stocked C-130 to Iraq to shore up its failing economy after we took down Sadaam Hussein. Five crates of $100,000 dollar stacks would have certainly taken my breath away especially in the Iraqi desert heat. I doubt "W" would have lent me his supportive arm as I tilted over.

When calculating the overwhelming hit we took fighting two wars and adding the cost of the Afforable Care Act, the trick is to not lock your knees. I was born in poverty and have grown accustomed to being poor. It's all you newcomers to poverty that I will be praying for. Breathe, don't lock your knees. There's much more to come!

Nevada School Shooting Kills Teacher and Wounds Two Students

Agnes Risley Elementary School. Sparks, Nevada. Authorities have yet to release the identity of the student that opened fire on fellow classmates at a Nevada middle school Monday.

The student apparently acted alone and obtained the handgun from his parent's home according to a federal law enforcement source. A teacher was shot dead while attempting to help students find cover. Two students were wounded within only a few terrifying minutes.

Authorities are still pieceing together details of the still chaotic scene hours after the event. Students said they realized the sounds were gunshots coming from somewhere within the school just moments before the morning bell sounded. Only moments after it began it was over. Sparks Deputy Chief Tom Miller said Monday evening at a news conference, the shooter shot and killed himself with a semiautomatic gun. They still don't know the motives for this most recent school shooting. "It's too early to say whether he was targeting specific people or just going on an indiscriminate shooting spree," said Reno Police Department deputy chief, Tom Robinson.

Math teacher, Mike Landsberry, was killed during the shooting. He was described as popular among both the students and staff. Landsberry's brother Reggie stated also that Mike had served in the Marines and served several tours in Afghanistan as a member of the Nevada Air National Guard. "He was the kind of person that if someone needed help he would be there," Reggie Landsberry said. "He loved teaching. He loved the kids. He loved coaching them. ... He was just a good all-around individual."

One student, Amaya Newton, described the student who killed the teacher and wounded two other students. "He was really a nice kid, he would make you smile when you were having bad day." said Newton.

Newton said she thought the two students who were wounded were friends of the shooter. Amaya's mother, Tabatha, said they thought the shooter had been bullied in the past.

Last week a student at a high school in Austin, Texas, killed himself in front of other students. In August, a student at a high school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, shot and wounded another student in the neck.
Another shooting occurred at an Atlanta middle school in January, the same month a California high school student wounded two people, one seriously.
The Nevada shooting also comes almost a year after a gunman killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, igniting nationwide debate over gun violence and school safety.
The mother of a student killed in December's shooting in Newtown said Monday's shooting was reminder of the need to find solutions to keep students safe.

Jim Leyland Resigns as Tigers Manager

Detroit Tigers manager, Jim Leyland, steps down and will not return for a ninth season. Leyland led the Tigers to two pennants during his eight seasons. He announced his departure during a Monday press conference stating, "I'm going to be 69 years old. I'm not ashamed of that. I'm proud of it. The fuel's getting a little low."

Although Leyland will be stepping down as Tiger's manager, he will continue to with the Detroit club. It is not yet determined what his new position will be in the Tiger's franchise.

Leyland boasted a 700-597 record with the Detroit Tigers with 1,769 wins during his 22 year as a Tiger. Before coming to Detroit, He won the 1997 World Series with the Florida Marlins. In 1990-1992, he led three consecutive NL East titles with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Tigers won 93 games this season and a third American League Central title. Leyland replaced Alan Trammell in 2005 as the Tiger's manager after a terrible 2003 season where they lost an American League record of 119 games. Under Leyland, the Tigers began a slow but steady rise back from the bottom.

"If I went out tomorrow, I wouldn't care how any of you guys felt, I would feel like I went out on top," he said in March. "I was a backup Double A catcher who hit .222. I've managed in the big leagues 22 years, with a world title, division titles, American League championships. Now, what the hell?" --- USA Today.

Leyland stepping down marks five managerial positions following suit. The Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds are all changing managers.

Leyland stated previously during the spring he had no intention of retiring. But Monday's announcement verified his intention to step down at least as team manager. Assuring everyone he would still be with the franchise.

"I want to retire a Tiger," Leyland said. "So long. It's not goodbye. And from the bottom of my heart thank you for having me."

Is it Over for the Bears following the dismal loss to the Redskins?

Chicago Bears quarterback, Jay Cutler is not expected to return for the season following the groin injury sustained during Sunday's game against Washington. MRI results won't be known until Monday with a possible press conference soon after.

Back up QB Josh McCown held his own standing in for the injured Cutler during the second half of the Bears/Redskins game. When McCown does take the field as starting quarterback Jordan Palmer will be there for support after receiving a call form the Bears. Palmer was impressive during preseason training and was smart to wait for the call.

The Bears offense can blame Cutler's injury but the defense has no one they can blame for their dismal effort against Washington. They lost a total of 499 yards and watched an 80 yard drive pass them by which sealed the game for a 45-41 loss. They can partly blame injuries as Lance Briggs was benched with a shoulder injury and Charles Tillman sidelined with a knee injury.

Griffin’s season high effort was throwing for 298 yards and running for 84 yards against the Redskins. The Redskins had the momentum with seven plays and 209 running yards. The Bears defense could never catch up.

McCown did bring the Bears back to the 41-38 lead with 4 minutes left on the clock. But the defense allowed the Redskins to get those 80 yards to win the game.

As the Bears begin a two week break before their next game, some would have to wonder if they can rally themselves and divert a potentially disastrous latter portion of the season. The injuries to Cutler, Briggs and Tillman may have cost the Bears more than the game against Washington. It's still too soon to tell if this game has cost them the season.

Can the Bears steady their defense without Tillman or Briggs? If this game is any indication, it would appear they definitely have some re-planning ahead of them. Perhaps the 2 week layover will be well spent planning for the worst possible scenario.

The ailing Bears have lost 3 of their last 4 games even with a strong roster. After losing so many starters it's difficult to hope for a favorable outcome in the weeks ahead.

The Bears meet Green Bay on November 4th and the Lions on the 10th. It may still be too soon to predict where they will place in the NFC North.

Andrew Luck to Peyton Manning: 'No Hard Feelings'

The sellout crowd at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium greeted the visiting Denver Broncos team with jeers and boos initially. But when former Colt quarterback, Peyton Manning took the field the boos slowly changed to emotional cheers. A video tribute played to honor Manning’s 14 season run as a member of the Colts as if to show there were no hard feelings. Manning took off his Broncos helmet and acknowledged the crowd following the tribute. One would wonder if there were any Colt’s fans in the sold out Indianapolis stadium. Colt’s replacement quarterback, Andrew Luck, received little adoration from this pro-Manning crowd.

There has been some controversy regarding Manning's return to Denver. During a USA Today interview, Colt's Owner Jim Irsay waved his Super Bowl XLI championship ring in the air as he stated having no regrets releasing Manning. But Irsay’s previous remarks did not cloud Manning’s return to Indianapolis stadium as he was greeted with a standing ovation.

At game time, Andrew Luck still carried the title of replacement quarterback for the Colts. The pre-game scene would make one wonder if Manning was leading both teams on the field with Luck standing in a huge shadow. In some ways, it was as if the game was already decided by the crowd as the 13th juror. Some have even said there would be two parades should the Broncos win the Super Bowl, with one in Denver and the other in Indianapolis.

Manning opened up the game against his prior Colts team with surgical strikes to his receivers to take the expected lead. But Andrew Luck was not content to remain in the shadow. The Colts offense pieced apart the Denver defense. Manning could only watch from the sideline as the damage was done. Andrew Luck repeatedly displayed his strong running game against the ill prepared Denver defense. Perhaps if the replacement quarterback lobbed bombs down field this iconic game would have had a different result.

Manning was able to close the Colt's lead to within 6 points but was unable to seal the win. The Colt’s replacement quarterback handed Manning and the (6-0) Denver Broncos their first loss of the season with a 33-39 loss to the Colts. It wasn’t a picture perfect Colt’s offense but it was the deciding factor in the game. Luck ran the ball and played it safe against the Denver defense who still managed to recover some fumbles.

What was notable more so than the well played Colts' performance was the resolute posture of Andrew Luck following the game winning play. He was no longer the replacement quarterback nor was he in anyone's shadow. He had won the Colts more than a game but healed his team of the Manning stigma. And the slightly confused Colts fans seemed to recover their senses and remembered just who their home quarterback was.

Andrew Luck met with Manning after the game to shake hands. It was a good moment and one of closure. The record is set straight between the two great players who fought a hard game that was played both on and off the field. Luck shook Manning's hand as if to say "No hard feelings, but we are now even."

Internet Cafes are a Good Investment

I have often considered the prospect of opening up an internet café. But investors are skittish of the idea. It's not marketable. People come in and perhaps purchase a $20 yearly access to the high-speed connection and sit without spending another dime. Lets build upon that.
First, lets scrap the old library booths and replace them with intimate booths and tables like you would typically find in a nice restaurant. And then we can have sectioned off private areas for study groups to sit and relax undisturbed. Be sure to include power access at each table with enough sockets for at least four to plug in. An outside shaded seating area in the style of a french café could be perfect for those who like to browse the web in fresh air.

Next, we have servers. No, not internet servers. It's a café, remember? Real live servers that can bring you coffee, drinks and small snack dishes made fresh behind a counter. Your internet access provides you the capability to order from the menu straight from your computer. Because we all get the munchies while after a few hours of surfing. And soft music not obtrusively loud but comfort to add to the atmosphere.

As we mentioned, we also like to meet new people. When we sit down and log in we can choose to connect to the café's social media page that you could post your Hello to everyone in the café. If we are shy we can choose to log in anonymously and only poke someone we see interesting to start a friendly private online chat. But please respect our "Do Not Disturb: Working" status if its shown.

Take a break and feel free to browse our magazine rack along the back wall and sit in cozy love seats while you read. If you want to finish the magazine at home you can purchase it at the counter or simply put it back on the shelf and finish it tomorrow. If you are a night owl or work at night and sleep during the day you now have a place to hang out that fits your schedule. Your internet café is open 24 hours!

With many cities cracking down on nightclubs and restrictive laws on smoking in public places, the options for potential places to simply hang out and socialize are growing fewer and far between. With the right atmosphere and planning, the internet café could step in to become our new after work watering hole!

A Coming Storm: Remembering Hurricane Katrina

The news had reported Katrina had done more than just batter the New Orleans. The storm hit the old city like a freight train leaving behind devastation, flooding and death. I had seen several hurricanes reach Meridian, Mississippi in my lifetime but this one I was old enough to remember. I had spent much of my teens hating this town. I felt trapped by it. But as I found peace within myself, I had come to love my home and my community. As the headlines promised Katrina's arrival I feared for my home and my community.

Meridian is known for her rolling hills. We actually live in a small valley near the top of one of the highest peaks in Meridian. Just above my house where the road meets Highway 19 you can sit there and look southward for miles. I sat on the hood of my car and watched as she approached. The power had been shut down at the main grid a day before Katrina's arrival to reduce the risk of fire. So the town already had an eerie feel. The streets were empty and the stores closed mid day. No one but law enforcement and emergency personnel were allowed on the streets. I had signed up at the local EMS as a licensed EMT and received the sticker for my car. I hadn't worked in EMS for a long while but I kept my license current. The hour was drawing near and my community braced for a hard impact. It was as if we were preparing for an air raid.
I worked at the Howard Johnson Inn as the night desk clerk. Every room of every hotel had been reserved in advance for the power company. They had combined the resources of every facility in the surrounding area to send trucks and personnel to the area and ride the storm out with us. The mayor promised they would begin restoring power the moment the storm passed over us. The trucks never made it. The mayor had underestimated Katrina. Even with the reports of the crippled city of New Orleans still coming in, our mayor assured us emergency services were prepared.

A convoy of power company trucks was deployed at key locations in the surrounding counties awaiting instruction. The logistics of moving so much equipment and personnel at one time had bogged down the poorly planned effort. The resources were available but had no where to go. 30 power company trucks and over 100 employees sat in the small community of Waveland, Mississippi. Katrina wiped the entire community of Waveland off the face of the earth. All 30 of the power trucks had been lost.

The sky toward the south had become dark and thunder rolled in the distance. She seemed to come in slowly. The contrast between the clear blue sky above and the black storm cloud below was quite beautiful. The ground beneath her was dark. Highway 45 north extended toward me from this direction. Cars were driving at speeds well in excess of 100 miles per hour attempting to outrun the storm. As she approached the tops of the trees beneath her began to twist and even miles away you could hear them snapping like toothpicks. The scene resembled a massive armored tank crushing the earth beneath it. My hand held radio issued a final warning. "All EMS Personnel report to your stations and to wait out the storm! We can't go out once it gets here."

I was stationed at my front desk where I worked. It was the most logical place for me. None of the power company employees had made it in so I planned to provide rooms for the flood of evacuees that would surely be coming in. They were already pouring in from the highway when I arrived. We provided the rooms for free but took the names of everyone arriving to keep a head count. Following this storm people were going to want to know where to find their families. The sky grew dark gray and an eerie sound like a howling wolf echoed across the sky.

The wind began to pick up and I stood with the evacuees in the hotel lobby has the tall Texaco sign across the street began to lean into the wind. This sign was atop a large steel and concrete post embedded firmly in the ground. It took the wind less than 20 minutes to snap this sign in half and send it crashing into the convenience store below. People said the wind sounded like a train. I don't think they were near where we were. The wind did not sound like anything we had ever heard before. It sounded to us like a growling beast and the children in the lobby were terrified by it. It groaned hungrily outside and it made you feel like prey being searched out by a massive animal. As the night progressed this feeling the storm somehow had benevolent intent only got stronger.

The wind came in bands increasing in intensity then abruptly stopping into sheeting rain. With the passing of each band we began to hear something like a large cannon being fired repeatedly. It literally shook the walls of the hotel. I took a flashlight went to the top floor to investigate. At the south corner of the building the roof was being lifted by the wind and slammed down again. The concrete wall was cracked by the force of each hammering fall. I evacuated everyone from the top floor and closed it off. By this time everyone inside was huddled in the lobby on the north face of the building.

My car was parked facing into the force of the wind. I hadn't thought to park it in front. I stared in disbelief as the wind picked the front of my car up with its front tires barely touching the pavement. The growling beast continued to howl with increasing force. My car began to glide smoothly across the parking lot then came to rest against the far embankment. Before this some in the hotel had considered leaving to drive further north. Seeing my car moved by the force of the wind ended such notions.

A patrol car appeared on the street approaching our hotel. The wind was increasing again. We had timed the bands of driving wind by now and knew it had not reached its peak. I tried desperately to reach the officer over my radio, but all communication had stopped shortly after the arrival of the storm. It was too late for him to go anywhere. The wind began to batter the patrol car. Where he was on the street provided him no protection from the flying debris. Bricks, metal and glass scoured the vehicle and we could hear it impacting the passenger side. This window was shattered and then the car was pushed over the shoulder of the street into a depression. The officer was trapped out there and I felt I had to help him.

We had the bands of wind timed perfectly now. I felt confident I could reach my car and go to the officer and return in time to beat the next wave. I left my radio with the evacuees and told them to continue calling for the officer to let him know I was coming. I wasn't sure if our transmission was even getting out.

I quickly got into my car and sped out of the parking lot I reached the place where the patrol car had slid off the street. I was running out of time. If the officer was injured I would have no time to retrieve him. Thankfully he appeared from his passenger side and I went down to help him up the side. Once safely in my car I glanced to my right and saw the entire hillside behind the hotel had been stripped of every large pine tree that had once stood there. The rain began to drive sideways again and I floored the accelerator. I parked in front of the hotel no and hoped we would be able to reach the lobby again. The next band was upon us.

The officer was given a blanket and towels to dry off. Everyone huddled around him as he spoke. He said he had no choice but to attempt the drive over. The location where he was posted had been gutted by the force of the wind and it was no longer safe to stay there. His eyes widened as the loud booming concussion rang out through our hotel. We told him it was the roof being torn away.

As we sat in the lobby wrapped in blankets the officer continued to try to reach someone on the radio. We had settled in and peered out at the devastation. Shortly after midnight there had been a calm and we wondered if we had survived the storm. The radio came back to life long enough for the voice to warn us the eye of Katrina was passing over. No one should attempt to come out just yet.

Morning came and the light of day revealed a torn and battered city. Entire structures were gone and fallen power lines lay in the streets. Shutting off the power earlier had been a very good idea. Vehicles were toppled and crushed underneath the debris of trees and wreckage. I wanted to get to my mom. We all wanted to get to our loved ones. The entire south corner of the hotel's rooftop was gone and every window on the south portion of the building blown out.

I drove as far up our road as I could before reaching a point where old growth oaks had been torn from their roots and dropped into the road. I walked the rest of the way to my mother's home. Our neighbor's home was badly beaten all her windows were gone and I could see her furniture had been blown to the rear of her house. I stepped through her large window and called out to her. Beneath the pile of her furniture and broken glass I could faintly hear her voice calling out. I moved the debris thinking she was trapped or injured underneath. She had gone down into her basement and the door had been pinned shut. To make matters worse the house had shifted and her water line broke flooding her basement. She spent the night huddled at the top of her basement stairs with water knee high beneath her. The water had been shut off as well but what remained in the lines emptied into her basement. I helped her out and made sure she was okay. I promised to return once I checked on my mother.

I was relieved to see my mother and several neighbors sitting comfortably on her porch. The location of our home in the valley between the hills had blocked her home from the brunt of the wind. Neighbors atop the hill had come down to sit out the storm with her. They had made a camping scene of sorts and even had steaks on the grill. The neighbors had returned to their homes and returned with whatever food they could find. We expected it would be days before power was restored and the food would have ruined anyway. They were making plates of grilled steak, chicken and pork and wrapping them in tin foil. I joined the team of neighbors clearing our road with chainsaws. We cut the fallen trees into firewood and left it piled at the roadside with a painted sign to others to take what they needed. By midday, everyone on our little road had a plate of food and clean gallons of clean water. We stayed without power for seven days. But thankfully no one in our town had lost their lives.

During those seven days following Katrina we had come to accept life without power. We visited each other and shared our resources. We sat on our porches and talked under the stars swatting mosquitoes and sipping warm beer. There was almost a feeling of disappointment when the power did return. We began to rebuild and life returned to normal.

Our first power bill was actually higher than usual even though we had been completely without power for seven days. The local East Mississippi Power Association supervisor was hauled before the City Council to explain. He said a power surge had been to blame for the nearly 40% spike in everyone's power bill. Someone in the crowd yelled that looters were supposed to be shot! I smiled as the nervous supervisor assured everyone they would receive a full refund. Meridian, Mississippi had returned to normal.

Ethics: It Matters in Online Content

In our efforts to produce good articles we can inadvertently drift from the facts of our topic and mislead our readers. Even as contributors, we are a part of the media and what we do is real journalism. The established media is becoming increasingly more biased and controlled. The future of honest reporting will soon rest upon our shoulders as the last true free press.
Readers rely upon us to present our articles accurately. But this is not enough. There are other things that can mislead your reader even if you are carefully researching your sources. We will cover some of the common mistakes we writers make then move on to some you perhaps haven't yet considered.

Darkening An Image
During the O.J. Simpson trial a picture of Mr. Simpson was used in various articles. The picture had been scanned and presented darker than it was in the original. This gave the image of Mr. Simpson a shadowy ominous appearance that was a bit foreboding. The image in its original was not that way at all. The same technique of darkening an image is used for effect in the entertainment industry. An example of this technique can be seen in the movie poster advertising the Vin Diesel Movie "Riddick."

Photoshop Retouching
Another photojournalist got into trouble for a photo he took portraying the devastation following a bomb explosion. The photo was his and the explosion did cause damage. However, he apparently used Photoshop to add more smoke and made the smoldering aftermath more elaborate than it actually was. This led to every photo the journalist had ever taken being pulled and investigated. His credibility as a writer, photographer and journalist was ruined. The validity of his articles and reports were never questioned but they didn't have to be. The retouching of that one photo was enough.

Altering a Source
Again, this can be quite by accident. I remember a game in grade school in which we all were seated around a table. The teacher whispered a short sentence in my ear and instructed me to whisper it into the ear of the student seated next to me. This was repeated around the table until the student across from me was told to tell the table what she was told. The sentence was totally altered from its original source. This can happen even in written text as the same source is written and rewritten over and over again. For this reason it's a good habit to verify the facts of a source with a few other sources addressing the same topic.

Embellishing a Source
This is where many of us can get into trouble. When reporting the information from a source you don't want to copy/paste the information but you don't want to run the risk of stating it in a way that isn't accurate. I use several other sources on the same topic to see if there is more the first source didn't tell. I take all the information gathered and present it with a more detailed view of the facts involved. This prevents the inadvertent embellishment of information while also avoiding simply rehashing a source’s information. And the reader is provided a more insightful reporting of your topic.

Meticulous research is vital to what we do as writers. Even when grinding out fluff articles about celebrity fingernail fashion we must be certain the information we are conveying to our readers is accurate and true to the best of our ability. The rule of thumb when breaching the threshold to produce new and original content is to provide sources and more sources.
Unlike politics, writers are not afforded the luxury of forgiveness once it's learned by readers they have been misled. As a writer, your credibility is all you have. It is the foundation upon which all your work is built upon. Once your credibility is tarnished, the validity of everything you have ever produced is questioned. I hope this article has been informative and good fortune with your writing endeavors!

What is America's Role in the World?

Augustus Caesar was the founder of the Roman Empire and was its first Emperor. After many wars, resulting in the expansion of the Roman Empire, Augustus stood overlooking the glory that was Rome under his leadership. His reign initiated the era of Roman peace known as the Pax Romana. The wars had been bloody and no quarter shown to neither the enemy nor their people as Rome sprawled across the known world. They paid for their attacks upon Rome with their lands, their blood and that of their people. The realization that followed was the cold resignation that they were now standing on land owned by the Empire of Rome.

By this opening, I am not advocating total world domination and the establishment of an American Empire. But neither do I pretend there is any other way to achieve lasting stability in the world. We have fought wars long enough in our time upon this earth to know the natural laws of warfare. You cannot invade a nation, cripple it, leave its resources intact and then leave. Within your lifetime, you will see that nation rise up and threaten you again and with more vengeance than before. In the act of your good intent you have made the deaths of those that fought your war in vain. And you place those that must now return to fight the enemy in harm’s way.

Germany was left with its sovereignty intact after WWI. The world watched as it rebuilt itself into a superpower that threatened every country around it. Everyone that had fought and died to put Germany down in WWI had died in vain. Everyone that died in WWII, putting Hitler's Germany down for the second time, died needlessly. Again, I am not advocating war in any form. I'm simply clarifying that although our perception of war may change, the nature of war does not.

History has shown us that war is a Pandora's Box which now opened will plague man throughout his existence until either one of two things take place: The total conquest and continuing control of all nations at war by the strongest power lasting until no one alive remembers war; Or the mutual agreement of peace by all nations as a result of the imminent threat of extinction. For America, one or the other is certain in our future. Left to continue as it is, war is certain to spread until it threatens mankind's existence. As history repeats itself, America's role should only be as a negotiator for peace once the warring nations has exhausted themselves fighting.

By all means our efforts should be in building our defenses for self preservation but not as a world police force. This has proven costly and counterproductive in every scenario since the Vietnam War. The images and reports that return to us from these regions are heartbreaking and we feel we should do something. But until they want peace for themselves, there is nothing realistic that can be done.

The American Flag: You Can Stomp On It If You Like

You can stomp on it if you like.

In witness to the videos of people stomping on the flag, refusing to pledge allegiance and participate in prayer in schools, I am reminded of a temperamental child holding his breath until his face turns blue. It's your breath, hold it as long as you can, but are you prepared for the headache to follow?

I can kind of see where you are coming from but you are going about getting your point across the wrong way. First, are you stomping on the American flag or the symbol it represents? Stop holding your breath, open your mouths and just say, "I hate America."Like my friend, Nikkie Sixx (no relation) stated, "If that's what you want just say it. I'm a big girl and I can take it."
Well, America is a big girl and she can certainly take it. It's your right to make examples of yourselves with these antics. But a more lasting and much simpler solution would be to do what's right for you. If I felt that strongly about it, I'd go live under a flag I could respect and take pride in calling my own.

If you have a message to send to the world, the mature and diplomatic way to address it would be to simply state it. As a child I stomped on my algebra book. Looking back, I realize I would have been better served by calmly stating, "I greatly despise algebra and see no use for it in my everyday life." Perhaps I would not have been sent home from school and subsequently grounded.

I can admit I can be a little dense even if others can not. But all I see is you hopping up and down on the flag we drape across the caskets of those that died defending me. Perhaps you don't see what I see when you look at that flag. I see blood, I see sacrifice, I see the human effort to achieve a better way of life for myself and those around me. I don't remember you stopping to look at the camera and stating your reasons. I don't think I would have listened after witnessing your behavior. So again, you are going about this the wrong way.

We all have things we hold dear to us. Pictures of our loved ones that have passed away are really just paper in glass frames on our walls. But they represent the memories and love for those we have lost that we still carry within us. We keep those symbols lest we forget. Those symbols ensure we do not lose even a small part of their memory. I'm sure you may have similar items of great value to you. If you bothered to share with me those symbols you hold dear and sacred would I stomp and spit upon them? No, sir... I would not.

We Need a Button to Change the World

Often I see my friends posting billboards related to current political issues on my social media pages. More so, these billboards spur comments and thread that can sometimes reach hundreds of replies. People are more politically aware than we have ever been before. And we talk about these issues daily. If our voices really matter, why are we not using the internet to effect the changes we need?

I asked my Facebook friends to weigh in their opinions on a "Facebook Button" that would petition our government representatives and let them know how we really feel about the decisions they are making that affect our lives and our country. The responses were not surprising, however, the volume of responses were overwhelmingly surprising. The polls are in and my friends want the Facebook Button! But do Americans everywhere else want it as well?

The premise seems simple enough. As the current outdated system stands today, important issues being considered by Congress are relayed to us on the news and we all chat about it. If it affects us strongly enough we call our representatives and get his/her answering machine. After that, if we still feel strongly about the issue we try to gather up as many signatures as we can to petition our representatives by a process of buying airtime on local stations or knocking on doors. By the time our voice is heard the vote has already submitted. Unless you can afford a lobbyist, your chance of actually influencing anything government does in real time is slim to none. If this really is a government ran for the people by the people why is it so difficult for our voices to be heard?

As I have mentioned in an earlier article, we are not using the internet to its fullest potential. Social media is where a great many of us are discussing these issues and a simple online petition system would not be difficult to put into place. It was easy enough to install a way to submit our tax information online using a digital signature. It would seem to be just as simple to have a way to petition our representatives in real time to ensure we actually are being heard.

I can't really pat myself on the back for this idea because there would be ramifications of a system like this. The president would be more inclined to address the nation rather than congress to approve military action funded by our tax dollars. Any moves made by representatives directly in opposition of the people they were elected to represent would gravely affect their chances of re-election. Lobbyist would no longer wield the power to influence our representatives with wealth and political gifts.

The ramifications of a real time petition system would bring our government back to the way it was always intended to be by our founders. For the first time in our nation's history, all Americans have the means to directly connect with our elected government leaders as easily as we do everyone else.

"This would be wonderful but wouldn't it be too much on the system?" --- Terrie Allen
This system would not be a simple polling that can be easily dismissed as circumstantial. It would be a link to a valid and binding petition submitted officially directly to our representatives. The social media page itself would only be the host for our petition button displaying the issue being petitioned. A real time petition system is not just a reasonable suggestion but would resolve the disconnect between the people and our government.
"I think this would be a great idea. But I don't see social media sites hosting conservative Ideas" --- Jason Hannah.

While it has been a concern in the past for conservative parties getting the access they need to the permits and legal required to validate their political organizations. The petitioning system would eliminate that as well. The need to form groups to get your message out would no longer be necessary. And the issues being petitioned could be either liberal or conservative. The petitioning site would be separate and perhaps even moderated by our government to ensure against fraud. And on this note, if the issue of petition tampering did arise we'd know we were doing something right!

A few have hoped to affect change by leaking government information to us. I suggest real change will only result from all of us leaking information to our government. And a real time online petitioning system would be more than a leak. It would provide each and every one of us a real voice in the actions of our government.

Gun Control Vs. Value of Human Life

Imagine we accomplished a feat in the government's crackdown on the issue of gun violence and all firearms were taken off the street. Owning a firearm is now illegal for everyone and strict penalties enforced should you be found with one in your possession. Would this decrease violent crime or would we simply find another way to kill each other?

Let's look to an age before the invention of the conventional firearm. Imagine a dispute over a debt has broken out at a local nightclub and one very bloodied and battered individual is crawling backward on the sidewalk. His pursuer is carrying a medieval weapon known as a flail.

In the days when he simply carried a firearm, he could never have gotten his point across with this much voracity. Something about really getting in there to do the work really brings the adrenaline up. And this heavy spiked metal ball connected to a blood stained oak handle by a thick chain has become his trademark. Before, those that owed him money faced the possibility of getting shot but didn't seem to mind. Today, his debtors pay him on time much more than they had in the past. They would or they would end up like this unfortunate fellow. He growls as the heavy spiked ball came down.

Perhaps the scenario is a bit graphic, but it's intended to be. If we were able to totally abolish firearms there would still be violent crime only with another form of weapon. So what does gun control intend to accomplish? Perhaps we should take a step back and look at what the real issues are. We are a violent society, "fundamentally insane" as Steve Buscimi quoted in the movie, "Con Air". But this is not a recent development. We have been violent for a very long time according to our documented history.

The solution is not a return to the value of human life, as a society, we've never visited there. Human life is a concept, an abstract, a keyword we use to describe compassion for others. The value we place upon human life should be priceless.

It's too easy to get caught up in a moment of confusion and rage and, for a brief instant, value the death of another even above the survival of ourselves. Consequences bring us to our senses later but the deed has already been done. Perhaps in that single moment you took a life and would never do so again. But now you are incarcerated among others that have killed. You then become a part of an ideology of murder and become indoctrinated into a society of murderous intent. You serve your time and get released even more dangerous to us all than you were before you went to prison.

A true rehabilitation system would be better served in our schools. Children could be given play money and present them to a table where pictures of loved ones, friends, teachers, and police officers were displayed. The child would be asked to divide up their money between each image with the most money being placed upon the image they most valued.

The child's concept of money is irrelevant, however, the image they value the least is significant. After the experiment, the children are asked, "What is it about the person in the image which caused you to place so little value in them?" The innocence of children is profound. The typical answer will be, "I didn't have enough money to value them all." And this is the root of our issue overall.

We can teach our children that they do have enough love within them to share equally with everyone. We can teach them what is beautiful and special about each race and every culture. We can show them the benefits of finding the best of people, even inside those that make them angry or do not share their beliefs. In the long term, perhaps these children will grow to not even want a firearm.
